Dr. Ata Erim

Dr. Ata Erim was born in 1929 in the Black Sea city of Samsun, into a family whose roots trace back to the Balkans — his parents Yusuf and Esma settled in Samsun after migrating from Ioannina and Drama. From a young age he excelled academically, eventually earning admission to medical school at Istanbul University. Despite financial hardships, including the loss of his father when he was just thirteen, he completed his studies in 1955 and served as a physician in the Turkish Armed Forces before working at Istanbul American Hospital. Invited to the United States by hospital administrators, Dr. Erim accepted an offer to practice medicine in New York — even though his English was limited. As he learned the language and adjusted to a new culture, he didn’t only build a medical career: he became a foundational figure in organizing and strengthening the Turkish-American diaspora. In 1968 he helped establish the Turkish American Medical Association, serving as its first president for nine years. In 1970 he was elected head of the Federation of Turkish American Associations (TADF) — a position he held in five separate terms.
